In the media, Taylor Swift often is portrayed as a wide-eyed, preternaturally sweet girl. She reveals nothing and is always just happy no matter what the circumstance Swift always finds a way to let nothing faze her. That is because every cross look and every hurtful remark is remembered and put into a song on her latest album “Speak Now.”

Swift’s previous records were just warm-up acts compared to the new album. Swift is wide open and holds nothing back; it is as if she wrote the songs not knowing that millions of people will hear them. In 14 tracks she is able to make the transition from teenager to adult.

It should not be a surprise that almost every song on this record is about love. In “Dear John,” allegedly about John Mayer, Swift sings slowly and mournfully about a guy who tends to have mixed feelings about her. Boys aren’t her only target, though. She picks up the pace on the Kelly Clarkson-like “Better Than Revenge.” On this track, she lets loose about a girl who has gone after her man. On “Back to December,” Swift is the one asking for forgiveness, from movie star Taylor Lautner, none the less.

Her skills as a lyricist still continue to evolve. Swift knows how to tell a story, and listeners might be unable to predict how some songs will end. Swift’s new release can captivate anyone willing to listen, and there is no question why it is just one of two albums to sell one million copies in its first week in the past 10 years.
